The garment industry is one of the worst offenders when it comes to use of pesticides on the fields that grow the cotton used to produce many clothes. The global textile trade has one of the worst records of working conditions and pay some of it?s workers. The synthetic fibres and dyes used in many textiles use oil as their raw material, the resulting clothes are not biodegradable and create pollution at the time of manufacture and for years to come.
Gossypium, Patagonia, People Tree, Howies and Hug ? what do they have in common? They are all pioneering brands addressing one or more of these issues, showing that ethical fashion is possible. One other thing these brands have in common is that they are all available from the Adili ethical fashion shop .
Just launched in the UK, Adili, meaning 'ethical and just' Swahili, believes that it is possible for fashion to be both stylish and made in an ethical and just way; in a way that gives rather than takes from people and the planet; in a way that upholds the dignity of those along the supply chain. But it?s not just clothing that Adili sells ? they stock a range of fair-trade and ethical jewellery and accessories from the likes of Silver Chilli and Made, along with super soft bamboo fibre towels from Babaloo.
Adili showcases these pioneering brands which are tackling head on one or more of the ethical issues involved in fashion production.
- Brands that use organic cotton - kinder to the environment and the farmer.
- Brands that trade fairly with small producers - supporting artisanal production, using the garment trade to overcome, not contribute to, poverty.
- Brands that use alternative natural fibres: hemp, silk, nettle, flax - thus reducing the dependence on cotton and synthetics.
- Brands that use recycled textiles and clothing - reducing our waste and saving the energy needed to create new materials.
Worth checking out is their newsletter subscription ? as an opening special, they are offering online product discounts for all new subscribers. Tags: organic organic cotton tshirts jewllerey silver textiles fairtrade bamboo

The 100% organic cotton is grown, processed and manufactured into T-shirts in India. The designs and printing is done on the edge of the Black Mountains, in South Wales. The result is an eclectic mix of urban and rural life with a twist of humour for good measure! Glo4life?s fusion of the incongruous proves that organic cotton T-shirts can be both sustainable fashion at the same time as being high fashion. Part of their latest range of tees is called "home on the farm" and according to glo4life, it?s all about what chicken?s get up to when they?re home on the farm and the farmer is away! Pants to Poverty was set up by last year?s students? group of Make
Poverty History and exists to help the white band to evolve and make trade work
for everyone and the environment; especially those who need it most: the
workers of the developing world.
Pants to Poverty will challenge injustice by creating ethical alternatives. They
believe that another world is possible and that together we not only can but
must create it. All of the money they generate will be invested in making their
supply chains as perfect as possible and getting the message for fair trade
heard louder than ever before.
Grown and sewn in India to the highest possible standards, the pants to povety
fairtrade and organic pants make trade
work for everyone. Show your support wear the pants!

Silverchilli was borne out of a desire to blow away the myth that 'third world' goods/crafts are of an inferior quality, to be bought out of sympathy for the cause rather than true desire for the product. An ironic perception when you consider that most 'labelled' clothing is made in sweatshops in the developing world, and that most Fair Trade goods are hand made to a high quality.
Silverchilli.com implements fairtrade ethics in a number of ways:
-
They pay for the production of your ordered item in advance.
-
They have spent time capacity building the communities to cost the items accurately so that they make a good living from the products you buy.
-
They design the products in conjunction with the Silversmiths.
-
They are working to delivery times stated by the communities we work with, not us.
-
They return 95% of our profits back to the community.
-
Silverchilli pays 50% in advance for all the orders to help fund raw materials, so the silversmiths are never out of pocket, and 50% on delivery.
Silverchilli are also keen to ensure that they do their bit for the environment and they consider it throughout their business activities. The silver our silversmiths use is obviously mined, but Silverchilli are conscious that there are things that they can do to make some contribution to off-setting the effect of that activity. Notably there are things they do to neutralise the carbon that the business creates through its international deliveries. They choose their packaging carefully to ensure that it is as environmentally friendly as possible. Also, in partnership with UK charity, The Woodland Trust, Silverchilli has started planting trees in woods around the UK. It takes just 5 trees to neutralise the carbon from an entire plane which flies from Mexico to London.

Forget about organic cotton or hemp for your clothes - they are just so yesterday. If you are looking for the next big thing in eco-friendly and fair trade clothing you need to go for bamboo.
Just what are bamboo?s green credentials? Growing up to 1 foot each day on farmland means it?s renewable and sustainable - it is harvested in less than 3 years. Also, being naturally resistant to most bacteria and microbes means there is no need for pesticides or chemicals meaning that it? organic. Made in to clothes it becomes as soft as cashmere. It?s naturally wicking and highly breathable properties means that it?s cool in summer and warm in winter.
New York based Panda Snack say they were the first company to have started taking the woody pulp of this fast growing plant and turning it in to silky soft t-shirts and polo shirts. They even hope to extend the market to include bamboo made home furnishings, sheets, towels and loungewear.
Here in the UK, Bam bamboo clothing, use bamboos naturally anti-bacterial and deodorization property to deliver a fantastic range of naturally anti-bacterial sports t-shirts for men and women. Bam even say that for every item you buy from them, they will plant a tree on your behalf in the South American rainforest. Meaning purchasing one Bam T-shirt - one tree - will account for the absorption of 367kg of carbon dioxide.!
